What Makes a Reimbursable Student Meal?
In Meade School District, no student is denied a reimbursable meal regardless of availability of funds on their student lunch account.
Reimbursable meals are meals served to students for which the district can claim reimbursement under the National School Lunch Program. These include free, reduced, and paid meals. The district receives full reimbursement for those students that qualify for free lunches, and partial reimbursement for for paid students' lunches.
A reimbursable meal must follow the USDA's guidelines for school meal patterns. The guidelines require that students are offered foods from 5 component groups in specific amounts. The component groups are meat/meat alternate, whole grains, vegetables, fruits and milk. The guidelines require that the student select items from at least three of the component groups, and that one of the items be at least a half cup of a fruit or a vegetable. If a student does not select a fruit or vegetable, they are asked to choose one. If the student does not, the meal must be charged as a non-program meal, as the school cannot claim the meal for reimbursement.
